 ZANZIBAR by Johnny Reinhard The piece utilizes a prepared bassoon to evoke an imagined mix of musical cultures on the African island, just off the Tanzania main land. The preparations include a sock stuffed in the tubing, a ping pong ball spinning on the tubing, and a “reed machine” made from 5 bassoon reeds that are wired together to a pair of chop sticks. Blues, Middle Easternisms, and African percussion motifs combine with various extended techniques to make for an entertaining work that begins with the bassoon in pieces on a table. |
