PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE:

 

Founder/Director/Producer - American Festival of Microtonal Music, Inc. (AFMM), a 501-c-3 not-for-

profit corporation established in 1981 in New York City in over 200 concerts of microtonal music.  Produced and directed the 11-day event MicroFest II (June 5-15, 1991) and the 8-day event MicroFest '88 (May 14-21, 1988), each consisting of 8 different concerts with symposia (New York University).  Author of program notes, press releases, liner notes, and grant writing.  Introduced PITCH CDs with 9 titles.  AFMM CD Between The Keys (Newport Classic 85526, now Sony).

 

Conducted:

Premiered Charles Ives Universe Symphony (1916-1996) as a Reinhard realization for 71musicians at Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center, NYC on June 6, 1996.  Conducted and performed on a commercially released compact disc through the auspices of The Stereo Society and Michael Thorne (2004)

 

Full realization Edgard Varèse’s Graphs and Time for 8 musicians (1987), conducting the AFMM Ensemble in Merkin Hall in NYC in its first performance.  The European premiere was in Paris at the Centre Pompidou (1996) with Ensemble 2e2m.

 

First performances of ensemble works including: Terry Riley's In C - Just Intonation Version (1988), Harry Partch's Ulysses Departs From the Edge of the World (1988), Mordecai Sandberg's Psalm 51 (1987), Iannis Xenakis' Anaktoria (1986) for U.S. Premiere, Robert Priest's Estudios Sobre Resonancia de Chile... (1988), Hugh Davies' Differentials (1989). 

 

Filmed as Conductor and cited in credits of the Nova television series production "Child's Play" on PBS (1986) and in "Camp Rising Sun," a documentary (1981).  Conducted opening concert of The La Monte Young 30-Year Retrospective with the AFMM Ensemble (May 16, 1987).

 

Directed a pair of concerts as part of Musiques Actuelles Nice-Cote D'Azur in Nice, France (1987).  Directed double concerts as part of "Microtonalismo Microtonalisma" in Venice, Italy (1986).  Traveled throughout 10 countries in Europe and across the USA and Canada networking microtonal musicians (1985-86).

Bassoonist -  Mozart on Fifth, including cross-country tour through Wisconsin, Colorado and New

Orleans (1979).  Bassoon soloist in Gordon Jacob's "Concerto for Bassoon and String Orchestra" as winner of the North Carolina School of the Arts Concerto Competition (1977).  Inter-state tour throughout North Carolina and the Boston area in a full production of Igor Stravinsky's "L'Histoire du Soldat" (1977).  New York debut recital at the Tunnel Gallery at Karl Mann Associates (1974).  Principal percussionist of the John Dewey Wind Ensemble (1972-1974).  Contrabassoonist in Dmitri Shostakovich "Symphony #5" with the Pittsburgh Symphony, and conductor Leon Fleisher signaled for a solo bow (1975).

 

Published: PITCH for the International Microtonalist (1986) Volume I nos. 1-4.  Collected over 30

fingering charts of diverse tuning systems, a Who's Who in Microtonality, and a 61-page bibliography on intonation.  Libraries subscribed to PITCH include: Chicago Public, Seattle Public, New York Public, Oberlin, Smith, U.C.L.A., U.C. Berkeley, University of Seattle, Univ. of Wisconsin-Madison, Free Library of Philadelphia, Dartmouth, Peabody Conservatory, Library of Congress.  Subscriptions include musicians György Ligeti, Lou Harrison, Wendy Carlos, LaMonte Young, and Steve Coleman.
